Schizophrenia is not split or multiple personality. Common symptoms range from abnormal thoughts and perceptions to a loss of normal functions. Without medication, some people with schizophrenia can be the victims of 'voices' that dictate their actions.

The risk for developing schizophrenia in the general population is about 1%. If the child has one parent with it, the risk increases to 14%. If both parents have it, the risk is 25%. If one sibling has it, the risk is 8%. The risk for nonidentical twins is approximately 10%. If the twins are identical, the risk is 40-50%.

There is no medical test for schizophrenia.
